Space heaters can help save energy if residents lower their household thermostat and use the space heater to keep their one most-used room (living room, den, or bedroom) warmer. Most EMEC members heat their homes with oil, so heating the living room with an electric space heater will raise the electric bill, but it will also lower oil consumption. A number of factors will determine whether the increase in electric cost is sufficiently offset by the oil cost savings.
