Frequently Asked Questions

I saw in the news that our bills are going to drop by 10% starting in April 2010. Will the whole April bill be on the new rate, or is that only on energy used after from April on out?
The decrease is due to a drop in the supply price of electricity in the Standard Offer Supply contract. This is the energy sold to you by the standard offer supplier and delivered to you by Eastern Maine Electric. The old contract end date was March 31, 2010, so any energy used up to that date would be billed on the old rate (9.15 cents per kWh). Energy used after that date would be on the new rate (7.354 cents/kWh through 3/31/11). The impact on your April bill depends on when and how your meter is read. If your meter is visually read by a human reader, it may be May before you begin to see the impact of the new rate. This is because our employee will have read the majority of his meters before April 1st. This would mean that your May bill was split between energy used before and after April 1st. Your first bill entirely on the new rate would be your June bill. If EMEC reads your meter with an automated reader, the majority of your April bill would still be on the old rate, because the majority of your usage on the April bill would be from before April 1st. Barring something unforeseen, your first bill entirely on the new rate would be your May bill.
